17 Killed as Russia Hammers Kyiv and Region With 24 Ballistic Missiles and 115 Drones

Seventeen people were killed and 44 injured in Kyiv and the surrounding region after Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles, four Zircon or Onyx anti-ship missiles, and 115 drones overnight on August 5, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

“At present, 44 people are known to have been injured in the massive Russian strike on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. Another 17 people, unfortunately, were killed. My condolences to their families and loved ones,” Zelenskyy stated.

The main targets included warehouses belonging to civilian companies, logistics hubs, infrastructure, and a railway station. Among the facilities struck were sites operated by Epicentr, ROZETKA, Fozzy Group, and Nova Poshta.

“Facilities unrelated to the war: a brewing company, building-material warehouses, civilian logistics,” Zelenskyy said.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 24 Iskander-M or S-400 ballistic missiles, four Zircon or Onyx missiles, and 115 Shahed-type and other drones. A significant number of the UAVs were reportedly jet-powered.

Ukrainian forces shot down or electronically suppressed 98 drones. None of the ballistic missiles were intercepted. Missile and drone impacts were recorded at 26 locations, while debris fell at six more.

Fires and destruction across Kyiv

In Kyiv, the attack caused damage in the Holosiivskyi, Obolonskyi, Desnianskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts. Kyiv City Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that one person was killed in the Russian strike, and 26 more were injured.

Fires broke out in warehouses, non-residential buildings, and other facilities. Rescuers searched damaged structures for people potentially trapped beneath the rubble.

In the Holosiivskyi district, a strike damaged a system containing approximately 300 liters of ammonia. Emergency officials said the leak was minor and did not pose a threat to the public.

An ambulance was also damaged by repeated explosions at one strike site, injuring its driver.

Heavy casualties and logistics sites hit in Kyiv region

The most severe consequences were reported in the Brovary district, while strikes also hit the Bucha and Fastiv districts. Kyiv region governor Timyr Tkachenko reported that a Russian strike on the region killed 14 people and injured 22.

Russian Missile Strike Kills Eight Civilians Waiting for Train in Kyiv Region

Warehouses, logistics facilities, vehicles, and railway infrastructure were damaged. Several victims were found near the railway platform at Kvitneve, close to logistics centers hit in the attack.

Train traffic and station operations were temporarily suspended during the barrage, with passengers and railway employees moved to safer locations.

Epicentr loses logistics centers and major production site

Russian missiles destroyed key infrastructure belonging to Ukrainian home-improvement retailer Epicentr.

A logistics center on Viskozna Street in Kyiv burned down completely. In Kalynivka, one company employee was killed, and three others were injured.

A missile also struck the Epicentr Ceramic Corporation factory, destroying its production kilns and forcing the plant to suspend operations. Two large warehouse complexes and approximately 20 employees’ vehicles were also destroyed.

Epicentr said ceramic-tile production would temporarily move to facilities outside Ukraine. Rebuilding the plant is expected to take at least 18 months to two years.

ROZETKA’s largest distribution center destroyed

ROZETKA, “Ukraine’s Amazon”, lost its largest and most highly automated distribution complex in Brovary.

Opened in early 2017, the warehouse was capable of processing more than 100,000 orders per day. The building cannot be restored, although no employees were killed at the facility during this attack.

“Last night, I watched three ballistic missiles strike and set fire to my life’s work,” ROZETKA co-founder Iryna Chechotkina wrote.

The company said it would continue operating despite the loss of one of its most important logistics sites.

Nova Poshta sorting center hit with cluster munitions

A Nova Poshta sorting center in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi district was also destroyed.

The company said Russia used cluster munitions in the attack. Two drivers working for a partner transportation company and one contractor were killed, while eight other people were injured.

Nova Poshta said customers would receive compensation equal to the full declared value of shipments damaged or destroyed in the strike.

A Fozzy Group logistics facility was also among the sites hit. The company operates major Ukrainian supermarket chains, including Silpo and Fora.

Zelenskyy calls for anti-ballistic interceptors

Zelenskyy said the casualties demonstrated the consequences of delays in supplying Ukraine with missiles capable of intercepting ballistic threats.

“Anti-ballistic interceptors are what could have saved the lives lost today,” he said.

“It is very important that partners understand that delays in their delivery, or an unwillingness to provide anti-ballistic capabilities, lead precisely to such horrific casualties and destruction.”

Zelenskyy said countries unwilling to accelerate interceptor deliveries could instead impose further sanctions on Russia’s missile industry, noting that a significant portion of its ballistic missile production remains unrestricted.

“New steps are needed from the G7 and the EU—from everyone who supports the defense of life,” he said.
