German Opposition Urges Sunak to Put Pressure on Scholz to Send Taurus to Ukraine
Following the US Congress decision to supply billions in arms to Ukraine, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) are urging Scholz to deliver Taurus to Ukraine.
Before today’s meeting, on April 24, between the Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in Berlin, the CDU party is urging the British head of government to address the Chancellor’s rejection of the delivery of German cruise missiles to Ukraine.
“The US package now explicitly calls on US President Joe Biden to deliver long-range ATACMS,” says CDU defense expert Roderich Kiesewetter to the newspaper “Rheinische Post”. “That’s why Sunak should also increase the pressure on Scholz to finally deliver Taurus,” he added.
The FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has also called for the German federal government to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine.
“The Chancellor has always assured that he is oriented toward the United States,” Strack-Zimmermann told the news portal t-online, “The USA will now deliver long-range ATACMS missiles to Ukraine. That is reason enough to act now on the Taurus issue.”
Strack-Zimmermann has long been calling for Taurus to be delivered to Ukraine, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz has always rejected this.
