The Russian hacker group named 22c and a cyber operator known as PalachPro have claimed responsibility for the recent global failure of ChatGPT, according to Russian Telegram channel Mash on January 23.

Reports of their claims were cited on the channel stating, “ChatGPT stopped working worldwide after an attack by Russian hackers from the 22c group in collaboration with a cyber fighter nicknamed PalachPro.”

PalachPro reportedly told Mash that the attack was motivated by ChatGPT being utilized to process satellite images to detect Russian military positions. However, there are no verified reports confirming that Russian hacker groups were involved in this particular outage.

OpenAI has acknowledged the recent ChatGPT outage, attributing it to technical issues. The company reported “elevated error rates” affecting both ChatGPT and its API , initiating an investigation around 4:00 am Pacific Time. Regarding claims of responsibility by Russian hacker groups 22c and “cyberfighter” PalachPro, OpenAI has not confirmed these assertions.

On January 17 it was reported that the hacking group Star Blizzard, linked to the Russian state, has been targeting government ministers and officials worldwide by stealing their WhatsApp account data.
