Sweden Announces Largest-Ever Military Aid Package for Ukraine Worth $1.3 Billion

Sweden announced it’s largest-ever military aid package for Ukraine worth $1.3 billion, according to the Swedish government.

This military support package will be the 16th from Sweden since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The funds, which will be included in a supplementary budget, will be used to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.

The country will hand over an ASC 890 airborne radar and control aircraft, which will give Ukraine "completely new capabilities for airborne radar reconnaissance and combat management against air and sea targets," as well as strengthen its ability to hit targets in the long term. The aircraft will also be delivered with training and technical equipment.

In addition, Sweden will hand over its entire fleet of 302 armored personnel carriers to support the formation of new brigades of the Ukrainian army. The package also includes Rb 99 anti-tank missiles, as well as artillery ammunition and resources for servicing previously delivered equipment. The aid will also include an addition of 155 mm artillery shells to increase Ukraine’s capability to combat Russian units on the battlefield.

The 16th military support package will also contain the following:

  • Surplus fuel transport vehicles from the Swedish Armed Forces;

  • maintenance of previously donated Swedish materiel;

  • financial support to capability coalitions;

  • financial support to funds and temporary initiatives to enable swift and large-scale procurement of materiel to Ukraine.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Sweden has provided $4.1 billion in support.
