Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commended Ukraine’s decision to cease the transit of Russian gas, calling it a significant geopolitical victory on X on January 1.

Sikorski stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “spent billions” constructing the Nord Stream pipelines to bypass Ukraine and intimidate Eastern Europe with the threat of cutting off gas supplies.

“Today, Ukraine has blocked his ability to export gas directly to the EU. Another victory after NATO’s expansion with Finland and Sweden,” Sikorski added.

Ukraine ceased transiting Russian natural gas on January 1, 2025. The country’s gas transmission system (GTS) is now operating in a no-transit mode.

Previously, the Slovak Prime Minister said that stopping Russian gas transit “will have dramatic consequences for the EU, but not for Russia.”

According to the head of the Slovak government, in 2025, it will continue its two-track policy, which will be oriented toward all sides of the world, and will “respect international law and not interfere in the internal affairs of others.”
