The United States has gathered substantial evidence that Russia’s state media outlet, RT, is deeply involved in global intelligence operations directed by the Kremlin, according to reports from CNN. The Biden administration is expected to launch an effort aimed at reducing RT’s global influence and raising awareness of its role in Russian intelligence activities.

According to CNN, the US Department of State plans to release declassified intelligence showing that RT is fully integrated into Russian intelligence operations worldwide. One official highlighted that for over a year, the Russian government embedded an intelligence-gathering unit within RT, focused on influence operations. This activity extends beyond propaganda, allegedly involving military procurement efforts.

“Under the cover of RT, information produced through this unit flows to Russian intelligence services, Russian media outlets, Russian mercenary groups, and other state and proxy arms of the Russian government,” said Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Friday, per CNN.

The US aims to ensure that countries are informed about the close cooperation between RT and Russian intelligence agencies, warning of the risks associated with the network. The forthcoming diplomatic campaign is expected to coincide with upcoming international meetings, such as the United Nations General Assembly.

The US has already imposed sanctions on RT’s management and affiliated entities, following allegations of interference in US elections. The Justice Department has also charged two RT employees with violating foreign agent regulations and money laundering. These actions are part of broader measures aimed at countering Russian influence campaigns, particularly in the lead-up to the 2024 US presidential election.

In addition to intelligence operations, RT has been accused of facilitating military procurement through online crowdfunding. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that RT facilitated the acquisition of military equipment for Russian forces, including sniper rifles and drones.

The US government’s broader effort to limit RT’s global reach mirrors earlier campaigns against Chinese tech companies like Huawei, which were similarly targeted for their alleged ties to government intelligence.

RT, formerly known as Russia Today, continues to expand its presence in regions such as Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa, despite being banned in the European Union and restricted in the United States. US officials claim that RT’s broadcasts have contributed to generating global support for Russia’s position in the war in Ukraine.
