Oscar-Winning Actors Sean Penn and Adrien Brody Star in Ukraine-Linked “Snake Island” Film

American actors Sean Penn and Adrien Brody are starring in Snake Island, a new film by Hollywood director Doug Liman about events linked to Ukraine.

According to Croatian outlet Danas, filming for the project has begun in Zagreb, Croatia.

Parts of central Zagreb have been transformed into a wartime setting for the production. Barricades and military equipment were installed near the Esplanade Hotel, while extras dressed in Ukrainian military uniforms were seen on set, the outlet reported.

Brody and Penn were also spotted at the filming location, confirming the involvement of the Oscar-winning actors in the project.

Snake Island is a fictionalized account of events surrounding the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The film follows a covert group of Ukrainian divers allegedly linked to the sabotage.

Filming began in July and is currently underway in Zagreb. A release date has not yet been announced.

Penn has maintained close ties with Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. On March 16, he arrived in Kyiv, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instead of attending the Academy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, where he received his third Oscar.

The actor has visited Ukraine several times, including Kyiv, Bucha, and Irpin, where he documented the aftermath of Russian attacks while working on a documentary project.

Brody also publicly expressed his support for Ukraine. In March 2023, he recorded a video message for Ukrainians, saying that he stood with those who had endured the suffering of the war for so long.

Separately, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao launched a fundraisef for animal rescue efforts in Kharkiv through a virtual tea session with supporters. Proceeds will benefit Animal Rescue Kharkiv, a nonprofit organization that rescues and cares for animals affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
