Ukraine to Produce French-British Storm Shadow Cruise Missiles Domestically

Ukraine will begin producing Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles domestically after the United Kingdom approved the transfer of relevant technology. British and French defense companies will also participate in the effort, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said during a visit to Kyiv, according to RBC-Ukraine on August 24.

Burnham said Britain had been the first country to provide Ukraine with long-range weapons in 2023 and that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had since asked London to share Storm Shadow technology to enable Ukraine to develop the capability independently.

The Storm Shadow, jointly developed by Britain and France, is an air-launched cruise missile designed for precision strikes against high-value targets at long distances. France operates the missile under the name SCALP-EG.

Burnham said the decision was intended to further strengthen Ukraine’s ability to conduct long-range strikes as Russia continues missile attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure.

According to the British prime minister, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is seeking to prevail through what he described as a campaign of terror involving ballistic missile attacks against Ukrainian civilians.

Burnham said Russia must be prevented from launching missiles by imposing sanctions that disrupt its supply chains and by supporting Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign.

Several hours earlier, Britain had authorized missile manufacturer MBDA to share classified technical information on British-made components incorporated into SCALP missiles.

The authorization allows the Franco-British defense company to provide Ukraine with technical documentation covering UK-origin components used in the missile, paving the way for the establishment of local assembly and production capabilities.
