205 Ukrainian Soldiers Return Home From Russian Captivity in New Prisoner Exchange

A prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia took place on May 6, with 205 defenders returning to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the development, stating, “They have been scattered across many Russian regions, imprisoned within a system whose only purpose was to torment them and destroy their humanity.”

Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced the exchange of military prisoners under the 205 for 205 formula, as reported by RIA Novosti.
The previous prisoner swap occurred on April 19, when 277 Ukrainian soldiers were freed from Russian captivity. Of these, 246 were part of the official prisoner exchange, while another 31 were released outside the exchange process.

According to estimates cited by the BBC, Ukrainian government records, testimonies from released prisoners, and partial figures from Russian officials suggest that at least 8,000 Ukrainian prisoners of war are still held in Russian prisons.
