Australia Delivers Abrams Tanks to Ukraine in Approximately $47 Million Military Aid Package

The first shipment of M1A1 Abrams tanks pledged by Australia has arrived in Ukraine, marking a significant step in bilateral defense cooperation amid Russia’s full-scale invasion, as was reported by Militarnyi and Australian Department of Defense on July 19.
According to the Australian Department of Defense, the delivery includes five of the 28 tanks promised under the approximately $47 million military aid package announced in July 2023. The announcement came alongside statements from both Canberra and Kyiv highlighting the strategic value of these armored systems for Ukraine’s defense operations.
“These tanks will be critical in strengthening Ukraine’s armored capabilities on the battlefield,” said Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles. He emphasized that the delivery reflects Australia’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and international security.

Militarnyi confirmed the tanks have already been integrated into Ukrainian training and logistics units for operational deployment. The remaining 23 tanks are scheduled to be transferred in phases by mid-2026, according to officials.
Australia’s assistance package also includes support equipment and spare parts, with the goal of maintaining a sustainable armored vehicle capability.
The vehicles, refurbished from the Australian Defense Force’s reserve stock, are equipped with thermal sights, digital battle management systems, and enhanced armor packages.
Earlier, it was reported that Australia began sending 49 refurbished M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine after obtaining US export approval, overcoming concerns related to maintenance and battlefield suitability.
