Italian Beretta SC70/90 assault rifles are now in service with Ukrainian troops, the 33rd Separate Assault Regiment announced on July 11.

The regiment was among the first to showcase the rifles in use. According to Militarnyi, Ukraine most likely received the weapons as part of Italy’s 10th and 11th military aid packages, approved in December 2024 and May 2025.Soldiers trained on the Beretta SC70/90 point out both its strengths and weaknesses.

“There are too many parts. You can’t take it apart without pliers or even a bullet. It’s harder to aim than an AK, and it’s heavier too. The sights aren’t great — not as easy to read as those on the AK. But the folding stock? That’s a big plus,” one serviceman told Militarnyi.

Developed in the 1990s, the Beretta AS 70/90 family was Italy’s answer to NATO’s standard 5.56×45 mm caliber. The SC70/90 variant, in particular, was designed with airborne forces in mind — featuring a side-folding stock for better mobility in tight spaces.

The rifle uses a gas-operated, short-stroke piston system, offering reliability in harsh conditions. Its 450 mm barrel provides solid range and accuracy. It also accepts standard 30-round magazines compatible with the M16.

With a well-balanced design, ergonomic grip, and contoured handguard, the SC70/90 is built for controlled burst fire. The mechanical sights are adjustable for range and can be paired with optics — though Ukrainian soldiers still prefer the simplicity of the AK’s sights.

Earlier, it was reported that Germany initiated domestic production lines for Patriot interceptor missiles, marking a significant move toward bolstering Europe’s air-defense autonomy.
