Russian leader Vladimir Putin is evading peace talks with Ukraine, according to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Speaking in the House of Commons on May 13, Lammy responded to a question from Conservative MP and former Foreign Secretary James Cleverley, who asked about the UK’s efforts to ensure that US President Donald Trump remains committed to defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Lammy noted that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and other European leaders had spoken with President Trump, emphasizing the importance of preventing Putin’s expansionist ambitions.

Lammy stressed that while Britain supports Ukraine’s desire for lasting peace, any negotiations must be preceded by a ceasefire.

“It is Putin who is evading, it is Putin who is confusing, and we must identify this, having extensive experience of carefully studying this particular individual,” Lammy said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine’s readiness to engage in dialogue but made it clear that negotiations could only occur if Russia agreed to a ceasefire starting May 12.

Zelenskyy also indicated that he is willing to meet directly with Putin, although it remains uncertain who will represent Russia in the proposed talks.

In related news, Keith Kellogg, the US President’s special envoy to Ukraine, stated that Washington and its European allies are ready to impose severe sanctions on Russia if it refuses to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine.
