Canada Supports Ukraine’s Right to Target Russia with Western Long-Range Weapons
Canada is actively lobbying for international permission to allow Ukraine to strike targets within Russian territory using Western long-range weapons, said Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly speaking at a Peace Formula conference in Montreal, Ukrainian UNN media reported on October 1.
Joly expressed support for Ukraine’s right to use such weapons in its self-defense efforts and noted Canada’s ongoing efforts to secure broader support from allied nations.
“We approve of Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons against targets on Russian territory, as Ukraine needs it for self-defense,” Joly said.
“We are also trying to persuade other countries to adopt this position.”
While the United States said that Ukraine does not require formal permission to target Russia using its weapons, Canada is encouraging allies to provide a unified stance in support of Ukraine’s extended defensive actions.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock voiced her support for providing Ukraine with long-range missiles for self-defense, despite opposition from Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
