Drone Strike Targets Murmansk Region Close to Strategic Olenya Airbase
On September 11, Russian regional authorities reported that the Murmansk region was subjected to a drone attack, prompting temporary flight restrictions.
Situated approximately 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Ukraine and at the border with Finland and Norway, the Murmansk region hosts Olenya Airbase, where Russian strategic bombers involved in strikes against Ukraine are stationed, as well as the Severomorsk naval base of the Russian Northern Fleet.
Regional Governor Andrey Chibis stated on his Telegram channel at 2:10 p.m. local time that three drones were intercepted over the Murmansk region. He also noted that the airports in Murmansk and Apatity were temporarily closed.
There is no current information regarding possible damage or casualties.
Earlier on September 11, Russian Telegram channels reported drone sightings near Severomorsk in the Murmansk region.
In July, the Ukrainian military intelligence agency (HUR) claimed that two Russian Tu-22M3 bombers had been damaged in an attack on the Olenya airbase.
