Dutch Prime Mark Rutte Minister Confirmed as Next NATO Secretary General
Mark Rutte has been confirmed as the next NATO Secretary General, following unanimous agreement among all 32 alliance members that the outgoing Dutch Prime Minister will succeed Jens Stoltenberg.
Rutte will take over NATO’s leadership at a critical time on October 2, a month before the US Presidential election, set to be held on November 5, 2024.
Former US President Donald Trump, the current Republican candidate, has vowed to maintain NATO membership but has also threatened to reduce US assistance to Ukraine if reelected.
As NATO’s head, Rutte will have to face multiple challenges, including supporting Ukraine at the beginning of winter, when Russia usually intensifies its attacks on energy infrastructure, and navigating potentially Trump’s presidency.
Mark Rutte’s stance on Ukraine is clear from his recent address during the Summit on Peace for Ukraine.
“We are totally united, have a shared vision on principles, on values, on decency. You do not invade another country. You do not abduct children. You do not play politics with the world’s food supply. And you do not endanger nuclear safety,” Rutte said.
The Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte has shown unwavering support in pledging to donate the F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, which are expected to arrive in Ukraine this summer.
Mark Rutte has also stressed the importance of providing Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems in order for Ukraine to protect its cities and civilians against Russia’s strikes.
“We know that many countries are sitting on large piles of patriot systems, maybe not wanting to deliver it directly. We can buy it from them, we can deliver it to Ukraine, we have the money available. It’s crucial,” Rutte said.
