Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has secured her spot in the Round of 16 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She overcame a tough challenge from American Jessica Pegula, winning their second-round match in three sets (4:6, 6:1, 6:3).

Svitolina’s victory sets up a thrilling third-round encounter with Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic.

The Ukrainian, who has previously reached the quarterfinals in her Olympic appearances, has been in impressive form in Paris. She cruised past Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the first round before facing her familiar rival Pegula. Despite losing their previous four meetings, Svitolina managed to turn the tables on the American.

With her victory, Svitolina joins her compatriot Marta Kostyuk in the Round of 16, marking a historic achievement for Ukrainian tennis. This is the first time that two Ukrainian women have reached this stage of the Olympic singles draw.
