EU Commissioner: “‘No NATO’ for Ukraine Makes It Easier for Russia to Plan Its Next Aggression”

European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, warned that denying Ukraine NATO membership would make it easier for Russia to plan future military aggression.
According to Kubilius’ statement posted on X on April 27, Russia is not concerned about a potential NATO offensive from Ukrainian territory. Instead, Moscow fears that NATO would protect Ukraine against future Russian attacks.
“Russia demands ‘no NATO’ for Ukraine. Not because they fear an anti-Russian NATO offensive from Ukrainian territory –but because they fear NATO will defend Ukraine against Russia’s next aggression. ‘No-NATO’ for Ukraine makes it easier for Russia to plan its next aggression,” Kubilius wrote.
The European commissioner’s comments follow recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who reiterated his belief that Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO contributed to the outbreak of the war, according to a recent interview for TIME magazine.
Trump claimed that Russia’s invasion was a reaction to Ukraine’s push for NATO membership, and suggested that Ukraine should abandon its hopes of joining the alliance.
The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s position. Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for Vladimir Putin, said that excluding Ukraine from NATO satisfies Moscow’s interests.
