EU Fails to Pass 18th Sanctions Package Against Russia as Slovakia Blocks Decision Again

The European Union has failed to adopt its 18th package of sanctions against Russia after Slovakia once again blocked the decision during a meeting of EU permanent representatives.
This was reported by European Pravda on July 9, citing three high-ranking EU diplomats familiar with the negotiations, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Slovakia continues to block the 18th sanctions package, and the issue is now scheduled to be revisited at the next meeting of EU ambassadors on July 11, the sources confirmed.

“There is still no agreement on the 18th sanctions package, as Slovakia is blocking its adoption,” one EU diplomat stated.
Another source added that frustration is mounting among EU member states: “We’re wasting valuable time when we should be sending a strong response to Russia’s latest shameful attacks.”
“The issue of maintaining the oil price cap also remains unresolved—three member states are unwilling to enforce it,” a third source added.
Earlier, it was reported that Slovakia threatened to block the EU’s 18th Russia sanctions package unless the European Commission addressed its energy‑security concerns.
