The European Parliament has passed a resolution demanding stronger collective EU responses to Russian violations of the EU’s airspace and related hybrid warfare threats—explicitly including the right to shoot down airborne intruders deemed hostile published on October 9.

The resolution states it “encourages any initiative enabling the EU and its Member States to take coordinated, united and proportionate action against all violations of their airspace, including shooting down airborne threats.”

It also “ welcomes the decisive and proportionate response by NATO forces, including the shooting down of Russian drones over Poland.”

MEPs condemned what they called “reckless and escalatory actions” by Russia, including multiple airspace violations in Poland, Estonia, Romania, and drone incursions over Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

In justifying the stronger posture, the text argues these incursions are not random mistakes but part of a systematic Russian strategy—military provocations combined with hybrid warfare targeting infrastructure, disinformation, jamming of navigation systems, and infrastructure sabotage.

The Parliament calls for revising rules of engagement, investing in layered air defense and counter-UAV systems, and aligning EU defense more tightly with NATO.

Even beyond the Parliament, EU officials are speaking in similar terms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, warned Russia is waging a “targeted gray zone campaign” against Europe, including airspace invasions.

She underscored that Europe must not be passive: “We must investigate every incident, and we must not shy away from attributing responsibility. Every square centimeter of our territory must be protected.”

Earlier, it was reported that Dutch F-35 fighter jets intercepted and destroyed Russian Gerbera drones that violated Polish airspace using AIM-9X missiles during a broader cross-border drone assault.
