EU Summit to Discuss Russian Attacks on Ukraine, Air Defense and Russian Assets Seizure

A special Eurocouncil meeting will discuss increased air defense funding for Ukraine, the transfer of frozen Russian assets, and countering Russian interference in EU institutions.

Among other topics, the EU special summit, which will take place on April 17-18 in Brussels, will discuss Russia’s persistent attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, including in the energy sector. This was announced by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, on Tuesday, April 16, in his official invitation addressed to the members of the European Council.

“Regarding Ukraine, following our extensive March conclusions, we will address Russia’s persistent attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, including in the energy sector. These underscore the urgency of intensifying our delivery of military assistance, notably air defense capabilities,” writes Michel.

It is expected that both on the sidelines and, probably, at the meeting itself, the issue of providing Kyiv with the Patriot air defense system will be discussed. Additionally, discussions will cover directing frozen Russian assets to Ukraine and the issue of Russia’s interference in the activities of EU institutions.

Previously, on Friday, April 12, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced an investigation into suspected Russian interference in Europe-wide elections in June, saying that the Belgian intelligence has verified the existence of a network trying to undermine support for Ukraine.
