European Commission Pushes to Integrate Ukraine Into Key EU Space and Defense Initiatives

The European Commission is moving to formally integrate Ukraine into key European space initiatives, recognizing the crucial link between defense and secure satellite technology in wartime.
On October 28, the European Commission submitted a proposal to the Council of the EU to initiate negotiations on Ukraine’s participation in the Government Satellite Communications (Govsatcom) component, according to European Pravda correspondent. This component is part of the larger EU Space Programme and the Union Secure Connectivity Programme.
European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier emphasized the strategic importance of the move. “We aim to fully involve Ukraine in the Government Satellite Communications programme. Why is this important? Because defense and space are closely interconnected,” Regnier stated.

He highlighted that Ukraine is already fully integrated into the EU’s defense program, and “now it is time to do the same in the space sector.” According to Regnier, Ukraine's involvement in Govsatcom will ensure secure space connectivity, which is “crucial for Ukraine's competitiveness, for the country as a whole, and for its citizens.”
The proposal now moves to the level of EU member states for negotiations and approval by the EU Council. Ukraine's full participation will be formalized only after a necessary international agreement is concluded.
Earlier, Ukrainian intelligence officer claimed that China is supplying Russia with crucial satellite imagery, which Moscow is then using to improve the accuracy of its missile strikes against targets across Ukraine.
