Four Ukrainian Films Competing for Best International Feature Film Nomination at Oscars
The Ukrainian Oscar Committee has completed the application process and announced the four films from which it will select the nominee for the 'Best International Feature Film' category for Ukraine.
This was announced on the Ukrainian Oscar Committee's Facebook page.
The national selection will include:
“Slovo” House: Unfinished Novel” (dir. by Taras Tomenko, 2024)
The historical drama “Slovo” House: Unfinished Novel” depicts Ukrainian writers from the Executed Renaissance era forced to work for the system, showcasing the transformation of a communist paradise into a communist hell based on real events.
“La Palisiada” (dir. by Filip Sotnychenko, 2023)
“La Palisiada” is set in 1996, five months before the death penalty moratorium. It follows a detective and a forensic psychiatrist investigating the murder of a colleague, both previously in love with his widow. As they delve into the case, they shape a future for their children from their unfulfilled dreams.
“We Were Recruits” (dir. by Liubomyr Levitskyi, 2024)
“We Were Recruits” focuses on a 19-year-old serviceman from the Third Separate Assault Brigade who documents the lives of his fellow soldiers, revealing their personal dreams and struggles amid their military roles.
“Peaceful People” (dir. by Oksana Karpovych, 2024)
“Peaceful People” contrasts two worlds by capturing the aftermath of liberation from Russian occupation. It shows Ukrainian towns and infrastructure slowly coming back to life, offering hope and countering the media's portrayal of destruction.
The committee will review the films for compliance with the American Academy's requirements and will hold a meeting on September 9 to select the candidate.
