During a session of the Russian State Duma on January 14, Sergei Mironov, leader of the "A Just Russia — For Truth" party, proposed using frozen Russian assets abroad as leverage to revisit the historical sale of Alaska to the United States, according to Russian media.
"Today, thanks to our president, Russia is a country shaping a new, multidimensional policy and a truly multipolar world. It is worth recalling that in 1867, Russia sold Alaska for just $7.2 million," Mironov emphasized.
He noted that, adjusted for today’s value, the $7.2 million from the Alaska sale would amount to approximately $16.2 billion. Meanwhile, an estimated $320 billion in Russian assets remain frozen abroad.
“Let them keep $16.2 billion and give Alaska back to us. If we’re starting to divide territories, we’ll gladly join in. I won’t even mention the Russian Empire and which modern EU states used to be part of it,” Mironov stated.
Previously, it was reported that two Russian IL-38 military aircraft were detected and tracked while operating in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone, marking the third such incident within a week.
