On October 19, 2024, the defense ministers of the G7 nations expressed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including eventual membership in NATO. The declaration was made during a meeting in Naples, Italy, as outlined in a joint statement shared by Reuters.

The ministers emphasized the importance of Ukraine’s military becoming fully interoperable with NATO forces and reaffirmed their commitment to providing both short- and long-term military assistance. “We support Ukraine on its irreversible path toward full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership,” the declaration stated.

The document also reiterated the G7's ongoing condemnation of Russia’s aggressive actions, which have led to global instability and war. The ministers reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stating, “We reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine’s freedom, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity for as long as necessary.”

In addition to the G7 defense ministers, EU High Representative Josep Borrell and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte participated in the meeting. They emphasized the necessity of continuing support for Ukraine’s defense and security forces, including through training programs.

The G7 defense ministers reiterated that achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, in line with international law and the principles of the UN Charter, remains the ultimate goal. Such a peace would ensure respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The meeting further highlighted the importance of NATO and EU support for Ukraine, including through NATO’s assistance and security training programs and the EU’s military assistance mission.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented his Victory Plan, with NATO membership as a central point. This plan aims to secure a formal invitation for Ukraine to join the alliance, a step seen as crucial in ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security and a key element in ending the war on its terms.
