German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has called on US President Donald Trump to refrain from making any concessions to leader leader Vladimir Putin that could undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on March 17, Baerbock emphasized the importance of transatlantic unity in addressing security challenges.

According to German media outlet Tagesschau, she stated that it is crucial for Europe and the United States to maintain a coordinated approach.

“The territorial integrity of Ukraine must remain the foundation of all negotiations, and no options should be taken off the table in advance,” Baerbock said.

Her remarks come amid reports of planned discussions between Trump and Putin. European leaders have expressed concerns that any unilateral agreements could weaken Ukraine’s position in ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Germany has consistently advocated for sustained Western support for Ukraine and has urged all international partners to uphold principles of sovereignty and international law. The EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting is expected to address further measures to strengthen security cooperation and deter potential escalations in the region.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced plans for a phone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on March 18 to discuss the war in Ukraine, the status of occupied territories, and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said the talks aim to explore possible ways to end the war.

He noted that discussions on territorial and energy issues have already been taking place between Ukraine and Russia. The call follows a visit by Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who reportedly discussed a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire during his meeting with Putin.
