Germany Calls on U.S. to Provide Another Patriot System to Ukraine

Germany is urging the U.S. to provide an additional Patriot system to Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on April 23 citing its unnamed sources.

According to the agency sources, Berlin’s pressure campaign on the US is part of a coordinated effort aimed at urging NATO and European Union partners to increase assistance to Ukraine with air defense equipment.

On April 13, Berlin announced sending one more Patriot air defense system, making it the third Patriot from Germany. Three Patriots account for a quarter of Germany’s arsenal.

In a press conference, following the Special European Council summit in Brussels on April 18, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Germany is taking substantial measures to equip Ukraine and now calls on others to make similar decisions.

Previously, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs 25 Patriot systems to cover all of Ukraine. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, told The Washington Post in an interview that Ukraine will focus now on obtaining 7 Patriot systems as quickly as possible.
