Germany to Send a New IRIS-T Air Defense System to Ukraine in May

A new IRIS-T air defense system from Germany will arrive in Ukraine in May, such systems will continue to be delivered in the next two years.

This was stated by the German Ambassador Martin Jäger in an interview on the national telethon on Monday.

“In addition to the Patriot systems, there is also the IRIS-T system. Some systems are already here. And now another system will arrive in May. We also promised Ukraine that this year, next year, and in 2026 we will supply more such systems. We are consistently working on expanding air defense,” Martin Jäger said.

According to the ambassador, Germany’s support to Ukraine will adapt in line with the country’s needs. Currently, Germany sees Ukraine’s greatest need for air defense systems.

Previously, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine needs 25 Patriot systems to cover all of Ukraine. But Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, told The Washington Post in an interview that Ukraine will focus now on obtaining 7 Patriot systems as quickly as possible. As of now, Germany has offered to send one more Patriot system to Ukraine, leaving Ukraine on a journey to find at least 6 more systems to protect its civilians and infrastructure.
