Ukraine Launches Investigation into Abduction of Civilians by Russian Troops in Kharkiv Region

The prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation into the abduction of civilians from a border community in the Kharkiv region. Under the direction of the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation has commenced, focusing on the violation of laws and customs of war.

According to preliminary investigations, during the recent offensive actions of the Russian army in the Vovchansk community, Russian troops forcibly detained and continue to detain civilians in a basement. Local residents were reportedly placed in these premises on May 11, 2024.

Fortunately, some managed to escape and reach volunteers on May 13, ensuring their safety for the time being.

The victims recounted overhearing conversations among Russian troops in the basement, discussing the need to execute peaceful civilians. Additionally, abducted residents were coerced into providing medical assistance to Russian soldiers.

The actions of the representatives of the aggressor state constitute a direct violation of the Convention on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, signed in Geneva on August 12, 1949, by, among others, Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine in the Kharkiv region.
