Jack Teixeira, a former member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaking classified military documents related to the Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to AP.

The leaks, which included sensitive information about troop movements and supplies, were shared on the social media platform Discord, where Teixeira had a small group of online friends. He used the platform to exchange sensitive data with other members, creating a private group where military and intelligence materials related to Ukraine were discussed.

Teixeira, 22, pleaded guilty in March 2024 to six counts of willfully retaining and transmitting national defense information under the Espionage Act. Prosecutors stated that his actions endangered US national security, jeopardized the safety of military personnel, and damaged relationships with US allies.

At the sentencing, US District Judge Indira Talwani emphasized the severity of the breach, calling it one of the most significant leaks in American history. Acting US Attorney Josh Levy noted that Teixeira’s actions had caused “incredible damage” and sent a message that anyone who compromises national security will face serious consequences.

Teixeira’s defense attorneys argued that he had no intent to harm the US and instead sought to educate his friends about global events. However, prosecutors countered that his actions were premeditated and caused long-term harm to national security.

The leak exposed sensitive military assessments, including intelligence on the Russia’s war against Ukraine, prompting increased efforts to secure classified information. Teixeira, who had access to classified materials as a cyber transport systems specialist, tried to cover up his tracks before his arrest by disposing of devices, including a tablet and laptop.
