According to reports from NBC News, Russian intelligence agencies are ramping up their activities in Mexico, employing tactics reminiscent of the Cold War to spy on the United States. Over the past few years, the number of personnel at the Russian embassy in Mexico City has significantly increased, despite limited trade relations between the two countries.

American officials express concerns that this expansion is aimed at bolstering intelligence operations against Washington and at propaganda efforts to undermine support for Ukraine. CIA Director William Burns has noted that Russia views Mexico as a new base following the expulsion of its agents from European countries after the invasion of Ukraine.

Historically, Russia has had a long-standing espionage history in Mexico, dating back to 1940 when Soviet revolutionary leader Leon Trotsky was assassinated. Today, Mexico is once again becoming a crucial point for Russian agents seeking to influence the US.

Analyzing the current situation, US officials emphasize that Russian intelligence is not only focusing on acquiring sensitive information but also on manipulating public opinion, which could undermine support for Ukraine on the international stage. Additionally, Moscow is using its media outlets to spread disinformation and create social discord.

US Air Force General Glen VanHerck confirmed that the GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate) has a significant presence in Mexico, raising serious concerns among American authorities.

Overall, the current dynamics indicate that Russia is intensifying its espionage activities in Mexico, which could have serious implications for US national security and regional stability.
