Japan Expands Medical Treatment Program for Injured Ukrainian Soldiers

The Japanese Ministry of Defense has announced an expansion of its medical treatment program for wounded Ukrainian service members, adding another hospital to the initiative.
According to an official press release, in addition to the ongoing rehabilitation treatment provided at the Central Hospital of the Self-Defense Forces, Japan’s Ministry of Defense and Self-Defense Forces will now offer similar care at the hospital of the National Defense Medical College.
The admission of Ukrainian service members to the new facility is scheduled to begin in mid-March 2025.
Japan has been providing medical treatment for wounded Ukrainian soldiers since June 2023, when the first two Ukrainian service members arrived in Tokyo for treatment at the Self-Defense Forces hospital. This marked the first instance of Japan admitting foreign military personnel for medical care.
Earlier, the Ukrainian government approved an $58 million grant agreement with Japan to support reconstruction projects, as announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal on February 11. The funding, provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is designated for rebuilding efforts, highlighting Japan’s continued support for Ukraine’s recovery.
