Japan Imposes Sanctions Against Russian Organizations Purchasing Arms from North Korea

The Japanese government opted on Friday to impose sanctions on nine Russian organizations, a Russian citizen, and two Cypriot companies that facilitate Russia’s weapon procurement from North Korea.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi stated that Japan “strongly condemns” the transfer of weapons from North Korea to Russia, violating UN Security Council resolutions.

“As the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues, it is extremely important to take actions in coordination with the international community,” said Hayashi.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan noted that assets owned by the sanctioned companies in Japan, including shipping and military firms, and individuals will be frozen.

United States Department of the Treasury on May 16 announced sanctions against two Russian individuals and three legal entities that facilitated the supply of weapons between Russia and North Korea.
