Putin Remains Committed to Controlling Ukraine, US Intelligence Reports

US intelligence has assessed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has not abandoned his goal of controlling Ukraine.
This was reported by The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with classified US intelligence reports, including one from earlier March.
One of the sources stated that a classified assessment presented to officials in Donald Trump’s administration on March 6 indicated that Putin remains determined to bring Kyiv under his control.
The intelligence reports do not assess US President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the war or the prospects of a 30-day ceasefire proposal. However, they raise questions about whether the White House is accurately evaluating Putin’s willingness to seek peace.

WP added that some current and former US officials have stated that even if the Russian leader agrees to a temporary ceasefire, he would likely use it to regroup and retrain his forces. Additionally, they believe he may violate the agreement by staging a provocation and blaming Ukraine for its collapse.
On March 13, Putin stated that Moscow would agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine only if Kyiv guarantees it “will not mobilize, train, or receive weapons” during the truce.
On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Putin is using manipulative rhetoric to avoid directly rejecting the proposed ceasefire, suggesting that Moscow is deliberately stalling peace efforts.
