The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador to Prague, Alexander Zmejevskij, in response to a devastating Russian attack on a children’s hospital in Kyiv. This move follows a series of condemnations from global leaders, including US President Joe Biden, denouncing the strike as barbaric.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Lipavský, currently in the United States, authorized the summons, delivering a stern rebuke to Zmejevskij over the assault on the hospital. Lipavský labeled the attackers as “humanity’s trash” and instructed the Czech diplomatic corps to convey this message directly to Moscow. “Killers who attack children in hospitals are human trash. I have instructed him to convey this to Moscow,” the minister said.

The Russian ambassador, upon leaving the meeting at the Černínský Palace, denied Russian responsibility for the hospital strike, asserting it was a Ukrainian missile that caused the damage. This claim contradicts evidence suggesting the use of sophisticated Russian weaponry in the attack.

This latest diplomatic confrontation marks the third time this year that Zmejevskij has been summoned by Czech authorities. Previous summonses were linked to issues ranging from the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny to cyberattacks attributed to Russian-linked entities targeting critical Czech infrastructure.

International reaction to the incident has been swift and condemning, with Western nations branding the attack as particularly shocking amidst ongoing hostilities. The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres joined in condemning what he described as “Russian brutality.”
