North Korea is preparing for a possible summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, according to a Bloomberg report, citing South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) on November 5.

The agency told lawmakers that Pyongyang has been gathering intelligence on American officials involved in Korea diplomacy and that Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui reconsidered a planned visit to Russia after Trump signaled willingness to meet Kim.

The NIS assesses there is a “high likelihood” of the meeting taking place as Pyongyang seeks to improve ties with Washington while deepening coordination with Russia and China.

Kim last met Trump in 2019, but both leaders have recently indicated openness to renewed talks. Analysts believe North Korea aims to reframe diplomacy with the US to secure recognition of its nuclear program rather than dismantle it, according to Bloomberg.

South Korea’s intelligence also warned that Pyongyang continues to assist Russia’s war in Ukraine. Around 10,000 North Korean troops have reportedly been deployed near the border with Ukraine, with others engaged in mine removal and reconstruction work in Russia.

The NIS suspects Moscow is providing technological aid to improve North Korea’s missile accuracy.

North Korea recently unveiled its new Hwasong-20 intercontinental ballistic missile and made advances in drone and missile systems, though the NIS says several programs, including hypersonic weapons and satellites, remain in early stages, according to Bloomberg.

Previously, it was reported that North Korea was believed to have obtained technological support from Russia in developing its new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), the Hwasong-20, which was recently presented at a military parade in Pyongyang.
