Massive Drone Attack on September 1 Causes Fire at Moscow Refinery and Hits 15 Russian Regions
Russian media reported that a fire erupted at a refinery southeast of Moscow following a series of drone strikes on September 1.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, 158 drones targeted the regions, though regional reports suggest the actual number might have been higher. The previous largest drone attack occurred in May, with 108 drones reported downed.
Following the attack, an oil refinery in Moscow's Kapotnya district caught fire. Simultaneously, drone strikes were reported at an SDPS (state district power station) in the Tver and Moscow regions.
Russian Defense Ministry indicated that drones hit 15 Russian regions. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the fire at the refinery was initially rated at the highest level of difficulty but was later downgraded.
The last significant drone attack Sobyanin reported was on August 21, which he described as “one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow with drones during the war,” and the Defense Ministry claimed the destruction of 11 Ukrainian drones in that incident.
