Moldovan officials are in negotiations with Russian oil giant Lukoil over the potential acquisition of the company’s assets at Chișinău International Airport, according to a November 11 statement by airport director Sergiu Spoială, as reported by Reuters on November 11.

“We have made a proposal on behalf of the airport, and negotiations are ongoing,” Spoială said. “We are considering several scenarios, and in my view, things are going well. Talks are at an advanced stage, but it’s too early to confirm anything. I expect results within the next three days.”

Despite Lukoil remaining the sole supplier of aviation fuel at the airport, Spoială said he does not see any risks to operations at this stage.

The Moldovan government confirmed it has offered Lukoil a deal to sell its airport infrastructure, including its aviation fuel storage facilities. The Ministry of Energy noted that it is pursuing an agreement that would deliver the greatest possible benefit to Moldova.

Earlier, Energy Minister Dorin Zheunghetu stated that Lukoil would be required to cease operations in Moldova starting November 21 in compliance with US sanctions.

On November 10, it was reported that Russian oil giant Lukoil has declared force majeure at the West Qurna-2 oil field in Iraq, one of the world’s largest, citing increasing operational difficulties due to Western sanctions.
