Moldovan President Maia Sandu said she would support unification with Romania if the issue were put to a referendum, according to The Moscow Times on January 12.

“If there is a referendum, I will vote for unification with Romania,” Sandu said in an interview on the UK political podcast “The Rest Is Politics,” arguing that it is becoming harder for a small state like Moldova to survive as a sovereign democracy and “to resist Russia.”

Moldova, which borders EU member Romania and Ukraine, has pursued closer ties with the European Union under Sandu while accusing Moscow of running hybrid influence operations, including disinformation and attempts to sway elections.

Sandu has previously said Russia planned to channel about $116 million to influence Moldovan politics, an allegation Moscow has denied.

Sandu was re-elected in November 2024 with about 55% of the vote and her allies retained a parliamentary majority in elections held on September 28, 2025, after a campaign in which authorities and Western partners said Moldova faced interference linked to Russia.

Earlier, it was reported that Moldova’s leadership warned of a sustained Russian hybrid campaign—including cyberattacks, disinformation, and election meddling—aimed at undermining its democratic processes and EU integration path.
