NATO reportedly plans to request that Germany contribute seven additional brigades, totaling about 40,000 troops, to bolster the alliance’s defense, according to three sources cited by Reuters on May 29.

The outlet added that precise details on NATO’s targets, whether overall or by country, remain highly classified and difficult to confirm.

One senior military official, speaking anonymously along with the other sources, said NATO’s future target for the total number of brigades provided by member states will increase to between 120 and 130. This marks a roughly 50% rise from the current goal of about 80 brigades. A government source set the target at 130 brigades for the entire alliance.

The news agency added that NATO is currently raising its military capability goals in response to Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which it now views as a far greater threat.

Defense ministers from NATO member states will discuss the proposal during a meeting in Brussels next week. The meeting will focus on new targets for weapons and troop contributions.

While there is no fixed timeline for deploying the extra forces, sources indicated that aiming for 2030 would be preferable, though likely unrealistic.

On May 22, it was reported that Germany will significantly reinforce its tank brigade in Lithuania, expanding the unit from 500 to 5,000 troops by the end of 2027 to bolster NATO’s eastern flank.
