Netherlands and Romania Join Forces to Train Ukrainian F-16 Technicians

Romania and the Netherlands have signed a memorandum to establish a joint training center for Ukrainian F-16 technical personnel. The center, located at Feteşti Air Base in Romania, will complement the European F-16 Pilot Training Center already operating there.

The Dutch Ministry of Defense reported on May 7 that both countries aim to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, highlighting the importance of not only skilled pilots but also well-trained technical staff.

“Ukrainians will use F-16s to provide air defense. Every day we see how important this is. Not only pilots are needed, but also well-trained technical personnel,” the Dutch Ministry noted.

Previously, the Netherlands Air Force had conducted training for Ukrainian technicians at Volkel Air Base.

The F-16 fighter jet’s complex systems—electronics, hydraulics, avionics, weapons, and engine—require specialized maintenance. Technicians are responsible for tasks such as mounting and adjusting missiles, bombs, and guns, integrating guidance systems, and testing weapons electronics.

The Netherlands has also contributed to Ukraine’s F-16 program, including the transfer of 24 F-16 fighter jets and seven jet engines. Additionally, it provides spare parts and maintenance equipment, valued at €80 million.

On March 21, 2024, the Netherlands announced an allocation of €150 million for F-16 weapons procurement, with another €300 million planned for later in the year.

In related news, the US is providing Ukraine with decommissioned F-16 fighter jets to support its growing fleet of European-donated aircraft engaged in combat against Russian forces.
