North Korean Troops to Be Deployed in Kursk Region Today, According to Ukrainian Intelligence

The first North Korean troops are expected to arrive in Russia’s Kursk region on October 23, marking their deployment to the frontline in Ukraine.

The statement came from Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR) in an interview with The War Zone on October 22.

“We expect the first units tomorrow on the Kursk front,” Budanov said.

“However, he noted that the exact number of troops and the level of equipment they will bring remains unclear. We will know more in a few days,” he added.

Additionally, HUR chief reported that North Korea supplied both missiles and soldiers to Russia in its war against Ukraine.

In return, Pyongyang requested technological assistance from Moscow, particularly in the development of tactical nuclear weapons, reported The Economist, citing Budanov.

The report explains that North Korea’s contribution of troops and weapons to Russia. It is part of an agreement forged between Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during their June 2024 meeting in Pyongyang.

Budanov explained that North Korea provides manpower and missiles, while Russia offers financial support and technological expertise. He added that Russia is helping North Korea bypass international sanctions and bolster its nuclear capabilities, potentially sharing technology related to low-yield tactical nuclear weapons and submarine-launched missile systems.

Earlier, it was reported that North Korea reportedly sent fighter pilots to Russia, potentially to support the ongoing war in Ukraine.
