Poland Considers Complete Closure of Border with Belarus

Poland is analyzing the possible consequences for the economy and local communities if it decides to close border crossings with Belarus.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Radosław Sikorski stated in an interview for TVN24 when speaking about the death of a Polish soldier who was stabbed by someone from the crowd of migrants storming the barrier on the Polish-Belarusian border.

When questioned about the possibility of implementing certain measures on Belarus, Sikorski responded "Our border crossings are still operational.” Adding "We are currently assessing how this could impact our economy and local communities."

The Minister pointed out that Finland closed its border crossings with Russia and stressed that the situation on Poland’s eastern border "is a fully coordinated operation between the Russian and Belarusian authorities at present."

"What is particularly alarming is that these individuals are being instructed by Belarusian state officers on how to assault Polish soldiers and border guards, even when our personnel are wearing protective vests. This behavior is utterly unacceptable," Sikorski stated.
