Poland Ready to Supply Ukraine With Electricity Amid Slovakia’s Power Cut Threats
Poland has expressed its readiness to supply electricity to Ukraine, according to Reuters. The announcement comes from Minister of Climate and Environment Paulina Hennig-Kloska on January 7 amid concerns that Slovakia may cut off power supplies to Ukraine.
"Poland will be able to increase electricity sales to Ukraine, but only if Ukraine asks for it," Hennig-Kloska told public broadcaster TVP Info. "Our operator is ready, it is only a matter of whether Ukraine will want or have to use it. Fico's behavior is against Europe."
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on January 2 that his government will discuss measures in response to Ukraine’s decision to halt the transit of Russian gas, an issue he described as significantly impacting Slovakia’s economy.
Later on January 4, The Slovak electricity transmission system operator, SEPS, confirmed its commitment to honoring its existing agreements by maintaining its electricity exports to Ukraine despite recent statements by Fico suggesting the potential cessation of such supplies.
