Rescue operations in Poltava faced significant delays due to multiple air raid alerts and the threat of another potential double-tap attack. Following the initial missile strike that hit an educational institution, rescuers were unable to immediately start extracting people trapped under the rubble as air raid sirens continued to sound throughout the city.

Eyewitnesses reported that the second missile struck just as people were moving towards a bomb shelter, resulting in additional casualties and complicating rescue efforts. Emergency responders had to wait as air raid warnings were issued repeatedly within the hour after the first strike.

In response to the tragedy, First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska expressed her sorrow and solidarity with the victims on social media. In a tweet, she wrote:

“My deepest condolences to the families of those killed and injured in the Russian missile attack on Poltava. This is a devastating tragedy for all of Ukraine. The enemy struck an educational institution and a hospital. It is already known that 47 people have died and 206 were injured. Russia is taking away our most precious—life. We will never forget this. Eternal memory.”

Earlier, the Russian missile strike on Poltava resulted in at least 47 deaths and 206 injuries. The attack caused the partial destruction of one of the institution’s buildings, trapping many individuals under debris. Rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities urging the public to remain calm and rely on official sources for information. A three-day mourning period has been declared in the Poltava region.
