During the G7 Summit in Italy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Pope Francis. Zelensky expressed gratitude for the Pope’s prayers for peace in Ukraine, his spiritual support for the Ukrainian people, and the Vatican’s humanitarian aid efforts.
The President briefed the Pope on the devastating human cost of Russia’s aggression, including the aerial attacks and the energy crisis. Their discussions also focused on Ukraine’s “Peace Formula” initiative, the Holy See’s potential role in establishing a lasting peace, and expectations for the upcoming Global Peace Summit. Zelenskyy thanked the Vatican for participating in this crucial event.
Additionally, the President acknowledged the Vatican’s efforts to restore peace, particularly their work to facilitate the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
Earlier, on June 13, there was an opening day of the G7 Summit, held in Apulia, Italy, where Ukraine signed two historic bilateral agreements with Japan and the US.
