Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico condemned the devastating attack on the Ohmatdyt children’s hospital during a phone call with Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal on Tuesday, July 9th. Shmyhal took to Twitter (X) to announce the conversation, highlighting Fico’s return to office after a two-month hiatus since the assault.

During the call, Shmyhal informed Fico about the Russian assault that resulted in the destruction of Ohmatdyt. In response, Fico not only condemned the attack but also pledged Slovakia’s willingness to admit Ukrainian children for medical treatment. Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Slovakia’s solidarity and support in these challenging times.

In addition to discussing immediate humanitarian aid, the leaders agreed to convene a third joint meeting of the Ukrainian and Slovak governments in the coming fall, hosted on Ukrainian soil. Shmyhal took the opportunity to thank Slovakia for its active participation in the Global Peace Summit and continuous advocacy for Ukraine’s European integration.

The attack on Ohmatdyt on July 8th resulted in a tragic toll, with over 40 fatalities reported. Cleanup efforts at the hospital site have concluded, while rescue operations continue in the Sirets residential area, where a residential building suffered significant damage. As of 12:15 PM Kyiv time, the confirmed death toll stands at 31, with 117 individuals injured.
