The European People’s Party (EPP), the biggest group in the European Parliament, won Sunday’s elections to the European Parliament.

The EPP is receiving about 184 out of 720 seats in the new convocation of the parliament.

The Progressive Alliance of European Socialists and Democrats (S&D) is the second largest group, securing 139 seats.

According to preliminary results released on Monday, populist and far-right parties gained unprecedented backing in this year’s European Parliament elections.

The Identity and Democracy group on the far-right saw significant advances, securing around 58 seats, while the European Conservatives and Reformists, a right-wing faction, experienced a modest increase in voter support and secured 73 seats.

The liberal Renew Europe and the Greens/European Free Alliance both lost a substantial number of seats.
