The Russian government has announced an increase in financial incentives for new recruits. Vladimir Putin has issued a decree establishing a one-time payment of 400,000 rubles (4,6 thousand USD) to mobilized, conscripts and “other citizens of the Russian Federation and foreigners” who will sign a contract from August to the end of 2024 to serve in the armed forces, including those deployed to occupied Ukrainian territories.

According to Putin’s order, the Russian government must determine the procedure for the one-time cash payment, as well as ensure the financing of expenses related to its implementation.

The document, published on the official Russian legal information portal, refers to a service contract “for the performance of tasks” for at least a year in Ukraine, including in the occupied territories of four regions that Moscow illegally annexed in the fall of 2022.

This latest offer surpasses the previous bonus of 195,000 rubles (approximately 2,2 thousand USD) and aims to entice more Russians to join the ranks. The decree also encourages regional authorities to match or exceed the federal payment.

Several regions have already implemented substantial bonuses. Moscow offers a one-time payment of 1.9 million rubles (22,104 USD), while Nizhny Novgorod and Tatarstan have increased their incentives to 1 million rubles (11,635 USD) and 1.5 million rubles (17,452 USD) respectively.

Additionally, Nizhny Novgorod has introduced a recurring monthly payment of 500,000 rubles (5,817 USD) for military specialists who sign contracts and join newly formed units.
