Rheinmetall Secures Largest-Ever Order to Boost Artillery Ammunition Supply to Ukraine

Rheinmetall, the Düsseldorf-based arms manufacturer, has secured the largest order in its company history with a contract extension for 155mm artillery ammunition valued at up to EUR 8.5 billion. Signed on June 20, 2024, this historic contract aims to bolster ammunition stocks for Germany and its allies, particularly to support Ukraine in its defense efforts against Russia. Deliveries are set to begin in early 2025, with recipient countries including Ukraine, the Netherlands, Estonia, and Denmark.

This extension of an existing framework agreement marks a significant milestone for Rheinmetall, highlighting its leading role as an ammunition supplier. CEO Armin Papperger expressed his enthusiasm, noting the substantial trust placed in Rheinmetall as part of Germany’s and its allies' security measures. The contract ensures the capacity utilization of a new production plant in Unterlüß, Lower Saxony, which will start delivering in 2025.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has underscored the critical need for artillery ammunition. Countries like Germany are securing large quantities over extended periods to meet the high demand. Rheinmetall has been ramping up its production capabilities, aiming to produce substantial amounts of artillery shells and gunpowder across its global sites.
