Russia Launches Combined Missile Strike on Kyiv, 1 Dead and 13 Injured Amid Falling Debris in Multiple Districts
At around 7:00 a.m. today, Russian forces launched a coordinated missile attack on Kyiv, likely using ballistic missiles, according to a report by the Kyiv City Administration on Telegram on December 20.
The attack caused debris to fall across 3 districts of the capital, leaving 1 person dead and 13 others injured, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed.
As a result of the strike, 5 people were hospitalized.
In the Holosiivskyi district, debris damaged an office building and a gas pipe causing a leak, and road infrastructure. In addition, 5 civilian vehicles caught fire as a result of the Russian strike.
In a separate location, the facade of an office building was damaged, leading to a rooftop fire. A collapse on the 15th floor has reportedly trapped people, 2 individuals were hospitalized.
Debris sparked a fire in a non-residential building in the Solomianskyi district. The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a fire broke out in a non-residential area. Authorities are working to confirm additional details.
Initial reports of debris in the Dniprovskyi district were not substantiated upon investigation.
The damage to the heating system in the Holosiivskyi district left 630 residential buildings, 16 hospitals, 17 schools, and 13 kindergartens without heat.
In the Kyiv region, the Russian missile strike sparked a fire in a warehouse, SES reported. The area of the warehouse is 15 thousand square meters. Currently, 72 rescuers are working at the site and 24 units of equipment are involved.
Ukrainian Air Forces reported that Russia launched 5 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles targeting the capital of Ukraine. The missiles were launched from the Russian Voronezh and Bryansk regions.
Air defense shot down all 5 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles that Russia had launched at Kyiv.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin, after claiming that Oreshnik missiles are impervious to NATO's air and missile defense systems, proposed a 21st-century “high-tech duel” over Kyiv to challenge Western missile defense capabilities against Russia’s Oreshnik missiles.
